Of Plowshares and Pruning Hooks

Isaiah 2 has really got me thinking…

3He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He will judge between the nations
and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.
Come, descendants of Jacob,
let us walk in the light of the Lord.

According to www.nationalpriorities.org the total cost of the conflicts in Iraq & Afghanistan will be $92 Billion this year, total cost to date is $1.5 Trillion.

What if a world that longs for peace took our military directives from the Prince of Peace? What if that same money was spent on plowshares and pruning hooks (agriculture)?

According to projections from multiple online source it might take only $30 Billion per year to end world poverty.  If we had spent that since 9.11.01 we would have roughly $1.1 Trillion left to spend on other insecurities that lead peoples into war.

Again from Micah 4

In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established
as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills,
and peoples will stream to it.
Many nations will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He will judge between many peoples
and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.
Everyone will sit under their own vine
and under their own fig tree,
and no one will make them afraid,                                                                                             for the Lord Almighty has spoken.

'nuff said?
