Of Plowshares and Pruning Hooks

Isaiah 2 has really got me thinking…

3He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He will judge between the nations
and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.
Come, descendants of Jacob,
let us walk in the light of the Lord.

According to www.nationalpriorities.org the total cost of the conflicts in Iraq & Afghanistan will be $92 Billion this year, total cost to date is $1.5 Trillion.

What if a world that longs for peace took our military directives from the Prince of Peace?What if that same money was spent on plowshares and pruning hooks (agriculture)?

According to projections from multiple online source it might take only $30 Billion per year to end world poverty.  If we had spent that since 9.11.01 we would have roughly $1.1 Trillion left to spend on other insecurities that lead peoples into war.

Again from Micah 4

     In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established
as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills,
and peoples will stream to it.
Many nations will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He will judge between many peoples
and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.
Everyone will sit under their own vine
and under their own fig tree,
and no one will make them afraid,                                                                                             for the Lord Almighty has spoken.

'nuff said?

Christ Without The Cross?

Jesus has many who love his kingdom in heaven,
but few who bear his cross

He has many who desire comfort
but few who desire suffering

He finds many to share his feast
but few his fasting

All desire to rejoice with him,
but few are willing to suffer for his sake.

Many follow Jesus to the breaking of bread
but few to the drinking of the cup of his passion.

Many admire his miracles
but few follow him in the humiliation of the cross.

God Is Not Fair, He Is Generous

"God is generous.  God's generosity spills over the levees we have built to contain it and surges mercifully over the landscape of human life.  The rush of God's generosity bears away in its flood every rickety shack built on human schemes of merit and the world's view of goodness."  Thomas Long

A message from the parables of Matthew 20 & Luke 15 regarding the scandal of God's generosity can be found here...  God's Timetable

There's A Wideness In God's Mercy

Great Lyrics and this isn't all of them.  There is a longer version somewhere but I couldn't find it today.  These 12 verses will have to do for now ;)

by: Frederick W. Faber, Oratory Hymns, 1854

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
Like the wideness of the sea;
There’s a kindness in His justice,
Which is more than liberty.

There is no place where earth’s sorrows
Are more felt than up in Heaven;
There is no place where earth’s failings
Have such kindly judgment given.

There is welcome for the sinner,
And more graces for the good;
There is mercy with the Savior;
There is healing in His blood.

There is grace enough for thousands
Of new worlds as great as this;
There is room for fresh creations
In that upper home of bliss.

For the love of God is broader
Than the measure of our mind;
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind.

There is plentiful redemption
In the blood that has been shed;
There is joy for all the members
In the sorrows of the Head.

’Tis not all we owe to Jesus;
It is something more than all;
Greater good because of evil,
Larger mercy through the fall.

If our love were but more simple,
We should take Him at His word;
And our lives would be all sunshine
In the sweetness of our Lord.

Souls of men! why will ye scatter
Like a crowd of frightened sheep?
Foolish hearts! why will ye wander
From a love so true and deep?

It is God: His love looks mighty,
But is mightier than it seems;
’Tis our Father: and His fondness
Goes far out beyond our dreams.

But we make His love too narrow
By false limits of our own;
And we magnify His strictness
With a zeal He will not own.

Was there ever kinder shepherd
Half so gentle, half so sweet,
As the Savior who would have us
Come and gather at His feet?

Lyrics can catch you off guard...

Sunday, March 23...ready to give benediction and head for lunch, when...

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior
